15-year-old football player Brett Green Jr. Continues to improve from a scary incident during a 7-on-7 tournament at L.D. Bell that left him hospitalized. The incoming sophomore was playing safety against when he was struck by an elbow while going for a reception. He was knocked out unconscious and taken to the ICU at JPS Trauma Center. “We were in the dark for awhile there on what was going on Saturday afternoon,” Lamar coach Laban DeLay said.
Green was responsive Sunday morning when DeLay came back to visit. DeLay said Green recognized his voice, opened his eyes and squeezed his hand. His breathing tube was taken out, he was eating and drinking and took a couple of steps. Green played safety, running back and slot on Lamar’s freshman team, which went 7-3 in 2017.

He also was part of the varsity track team this past season. Green was a member of the relay team that went to regionals, and participated in the 200 meter dash and long jump. Outside of athletics, Green plays the violin in the orchestra and choir.

“Brett is a brilliant young man and straight-A student,” DeLay said. “He’s mentally and physically gifted and I think that has helped with him recovering so well. “People that know him and a lot of people that don’t know him came to visit. People at the game came to visit and pray,” Green Sr. “The support is what breaks me down – it’s amazing. There’s so much love.”.
